A seasonal visitor information center in the town of Montague, in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island, will not reopen this year and will instead be replaced by a digital tourism kiosk at a new, to-be-determined location, according to a report in The Eastern Graphic.
The center, operated by Points East Coastal Drive at the Montague waterfront, closed after several years of service.
Officials cited declining visitor numbers, rising lease costs, stagnant provincial funding, parking challenges and staff retirements as factors behind the decision.
Supporters of the digital kiosk said changing travel habits have reduced demand for staffed visitor centers, as many travelers now rely on smartphones for information. Others argued traditional visitor centers remain valuable for tourists who prefer in-person assistance and local expertise. Officials said discussions with the province about maintaining tourism services in Montague are expected to continue as plans for the digital kiosk move forward.
