Centre Wellington Township in southwest Ontario, Canada, has temporarily suspended its paid parking program in the town of Elora while officials investigate a technical issue affecting the system, according to an EloraFergusToday report. Township CAO Dan Wilson said that there is no timeline for when the service will return, and he declined to comment on whether the problem was the result of a cyberattack beyond information already released publicly.
The issue came to light recently when users attempting to pay parking penalty notices were reportedly redirected from the township's payment website to unrelated sites, including online retailers and adult-content websites. In response, township staff covered parking kiosks and QR codes throughout the community, and signs were posted notifying visitors that parking fees have been temporarily waived.
Township officials said they have been working with their service provider to investigate and resolve the issue. The township also stated there is no evidence that personal information, payment details or financial data have been compromised.
