The City of Ottawa, Canada, began installing new pay-by-plate parking kiosks Nov. 2 as part of a citywide modernization of its parking payment system, according to a CityNews report. Approximately 660 kiosks will be installed over five months, beginning with city-managed parking lots before expanding to on-street parking spaces and municipal garages.
The new system links parking payments directly to vehicle license plate numbers, eliminating the need for drivers to return to their vehicles to display printed receipts. Drivers will enter their license plate numbers, select their parking duration and complete payment at the touchscreen terminal. The rollout is expected to continue through spring 2027.
The kiosks will accept coins, contactless debit and credit card payments, Apple Pay and Google Pay. Ottawa's existing PayByPhone mobile payment service will remain available, and the city said parking rates and enforcement hours will not change as part of the equipment upgrade.
