Viva Republica plans facial recognition payments at cinema kiosks

South Korean financial technology company Viva Republica, operator of the Toss app, has partnered with cinema chain CJ CGV to introduce facial recognition payments at movie theaters. The companies signed a memorandum of understanding on Sept. 18 to deploy Toss FacePay for ticket and concession purchases, according to a DigitalToday report.

Under the agreement, CGV will install Toss FrontCam cameras on its existing self-service kiosks and connect them with the theater chain's payment system. Enrolled customers will be able to verify their identities and complete purchases with their faces instead of using cash, payment cards or mobile phones.

The service will debut at CGV Yongsan iPark Mall in Seoul before expanding to theaters across South Korea. Toss said the partnership is part of its effort to increase the number of locations where consumers can use FacePay.
