British supermarket chain Sainsbury's has temporarily suspended facial recognition technology at its East Dulwich store in London after employees wrongly accused a customer of shoplifting, according to an AsatuNews report. Matt Arnold, a 46-year-old comedy promoter, was stopped at a self-checkout and told to leave Aug. 6 despite scanning his purchases and loyalty card.

Sainsbury's apologized and said employees mishandled a valid system alert, blaming human error rather than the Facewatch software. The retailer said the system is 99.98% accurate and requires a trained manager to review each potential match. Use of the technology at the store will remain suspended while the company investigates and provides additional employee training.

The incident has intensified criticism of facial recognition in retail. Privacy group Big Brother Watch said the technology can expose innocent customers to false accusations and allow businesses to share watchlist information without adequate safeguards. Sainsbury's, which has credited earlier trials with reducing theft and aggressive behavior, had announced plans to install the system in 150 additional stores.
