ChargePoint has installed a rapid electric-vehicle charging system at Portland International Airport in Oregon to support rental-car fleets, according to a press release. The deployment is located at the airport's Quick Turnaround Facility, where rental companies prepare vehicles between customer pickups.
The installation includes 10 dual-port fast-charging dispensers capable of charging up to 20 vehicles simultaneously. The dispensers are mounted overhead and use retractable cables, preserving ground-level space and reducing the likelihood that vehicles will damage charging equipment.
Jeremiah Hartley, Portland International Airport's rental car manager, said the overhead design reduced installation expenses by limiting the amount of conduit and wiring required.
ChargePoint CEO Rick Wilmer said the project demonstrates how airports can add high-power charging to existing facilities as rental companies expand their electric vehicle fleets.
ChargePoint's fleet-management software provides remote monitoring, troubleshooting and real-time control of charging activity. The system can adjust charging to operational demands, helping rental companies prepare vehicles more efficiently and improve fleet availability. ChargePoint said the combination of overhead equipment and management software could provide a model for similar airport installations.
