Several Visitax payment kiosks at Cancun International Airport have been shut down following complaints that travelers were charged more than the official tourist tax, according to a Cancun Sun report. Visitors alleged the kiosks added processing charges, convenience fees or unfavorable currency conversion rates to the tax collected by Mexico's Quintana Roo state.
Tourism Secretary Bernardo Cueto Riestra told the news outlet that social media complaints prompted the response, although officials had not received formal complaints through government channels. Authorities also are examining collection procedures at Tulum International Airport as part of efforts to standardize the process.
The tax supports infrastructure, security and tourism services. Travelers can pay through the state's official Visitax website and retain a digital receipt with a QR code as proof of payment, the report said.
