British passenger rail operator Southeastern plans to install more than 200 ticket vending machines across its rail network as part of a $12.2 million modernization project, according to a Rail Technology Magazine report. The first machines are expected to enter service before the end of 2026, replacing equipment that in some cases has been operating for more than 20 years.

The machines will offer faster touchscreens, contactless payments, Oyster card top-ups and assistance with selecting appropriate fares. They will also support barcode tickets and include accessibility features such as high-contrast displays, adjustable-height screens and multiple language options. The upgrades reflect passengers' growing use of mobile apps, digital season tickets and other forms of electronic ticketing.

Customer Experience Director David Wornham said the machines will give passengers a quicker, more independent purchasing option while allowing ticket office employees to continue providing personalized assistance. The rollout is part of a broader improvement program that includes updated ticket office technology and new handheld devices for employees, with the goal of creating a consistent purchasing experience across ticket offices, machines, trains and Southeastern's mobile app
