Spanish engineering and technology company Indra has been awarded a contract by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority to modernize the Metro's ticket-vending and customer-service infrastructure, according to a report in the Spanish business publication CincoDías. The agreement covers the design, manufacture, installation and maintenance of 450 ticket vending and customer service terminals across the system's 98 stations.

The contract is valued at between $38.9 million and $75 million and includes 15 years of maintenance and support.

The new terminals will support modern payment technologies, improve the customer experience and provide a platform that can adapt to future fare collection requirements. Some of the equipment will be assembled at Indra's facility in Kansas City, Missouri.

Indra specializes in transportation systems, defense, air traffic management, digital transformation, payment systems and public-sector technology solutions. The company is one of the world's largest providers of fare collection and ticketing systems for transit agencies, rail networks, airports and toll roads.
