Scandit has entered the retail loss prevention market with a vision artificial intelligence system designed to identify potential losses at self-checkout as transactions occur, according to a press release. The company's Self-Checkout Loss Prevention software detects issues including missed scans, deliberately skipped merchandise, items left in shopping carts and abandoned transactions. When the system identifies a problem, it can prompt the shopper to correct it or alert an employee when additional intervention is necessary. Scandit says the technology can recover or deter more than 75% of losses associated with self-checkout.
The launch comes as retailers contend with higher losses associated with self-service checkout. Research from ECR Retail Loss cited by Scandit found self-checkout accounts for 54% of transactions at stores offering the technology. Those stores experience losses 33% higher than comparable locations without self-checkout, while losses increase an average of 22% during the first year after installation. Scandit Chief Technology Officer and co-founder Christian Floerkemeier said the company's approach is intended to reduce losses without forcing retailers to sacrifice checkout speed or devote employees to routine interventions.
Scandit's software uses a per-station architecture and can work with built-in cameras, standard security cameras or other existing camera equipment, reducing the need for dedicated artificial intelligence hardware and servers. Video is processed at the checkout station, and the system analyzes merchandise and transaction activity without using facial or biometric identification. The loss prevention system follows Scandit's July launch of Age Verified Self-Checkout, which automates verification for purchases of age-restricted products.
