One man’s trash is also his treasure

February 2, 2011

Spectators and players at The Waste Management Phoenix Open can turn their trash into treasure, according to an interview at the PGA tournament in Scottsdale, Arizona published on azfamily.com

"If you put it [your trash] in the trash, you don't get anything," said Dan Vermeer of Waste Management, the event's sponsor. "If you take it to one of our kiosks, you can actually win something."

Prizes include coupons for food and drinks and tickets to sporting events.

In addition to the recycling kiosks, the Phoenix Open is also harnessing the power of the sun, using solar units to power the TV monitors and lights in some of the tents.

"This is incredible," Vermeer said. "You can take a golf course, take it into a city that 100,000 people visit every day for five days, and then turn it back into a golf course and not impact the environment. That's incredible."
