NC library adds free blood pressure kiosk, take-home monitors

The High Point Public Library in North Carolina is partnering with the American Heart Association to provide free blood pressure screenings, according to an ABC 45 News report.

The library installed a kiosk that allows visitors to measure their blood pressure, monitor changes over time and access information about heart health.

Librarian Ginny Lewis told the news outlet the service could particularly help residents who cannot afford home monitors or are unsure how to use them. Visitors are advised to rest for several minutes before placing an arm inside the kiosk's cuff and starting the test. The machine then prints the results, which users can record and share with a health care provider. Library employees will be trained to assist visitors.

The library will also make blood pressure cuff kits available for checkout for up to two weeks, allowing patrons to take readings at home. The initiative is intended to encourage regular monitoring and help residents identify readings that may require medical attention. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly half of U.S. adults have high blood pressure.
