Little Rock, Arkansas, lawmakers recently authorized 12 additional Wi-Fi kiosks for the downtown area. The 7-foot kiosks will be provided through a Smart City Media-Duke Energy One partnership and will offer interactive apps and information.
The city unveiled the first CityPost-branded kiosk in June in front of the Statehouse Convention Center. That kiosk provided information about local restaurants and advertising.
The city and the Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau will provide most of the content for the kiosks.
Mike Mainthow, a spokesperson for Smart City Media, said that small businesses will be featured on the kiosk network for free.
Smart City Media will sell advertising and provide 25 percent of the net ad revenue to the city, minus the cost of installation, maintenance, insurance and ad sales commissions. The city agreed to a 10-year franchise agreement for the kiosks.
Mainthow said the city could receive as much as $100,000 within the first year, depending on the number of kiosks and paid ads.
Smart City Media also will work with Little Rock police to use video recordings from the kiosks to investigate reported crimes.
