A proposed bill in the Connecticut legislature would impose new restrictions on the use of self-checkout kiosks in retail stores, according to a report in The Mirror.
Senate Bill 438 would limit the number of self-checkout stations in operation and require retailers to maintain at least one staffed checkout lane for every two self-service kiosks.
The legislation also includes operational controls aimed at increasing oversight. Retailers would be required to assign an employee to monitor each pair of self-checkout machines, and stores would be prohibited from operating more than eight self-checkout lanes at a time. If approved, the rules would take effect Oct. 1 and apply to major retailers across the state.
The proposal comes amid growing concerns about theft linked to self-checkout use. Research cited by the Mirror revealed 27% of users admitted to intentionally not scanning at least one item, while 69% believe the technology makes theft easier. Despite these concerns, more than half of shoppers said they prefer using self-checkout, underscoring the tension between convenience and loss prevention driving the legislation.
