Visitors to three campgrounds within the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument in central Montana can now pay camping and recreation fees using cashless kiosks, according to a Bureau of Land Management press release.

The BLM has installed electronic payment stations at Coal Banks Landing, Judith Landing and James Kipp campgrounds, allowing users to pay by credit card through a touchscreen interface and receive a printed receipt.

Officials said the upgrade reflects changing consumer habits, as fewer visitors carry cash. Monument Manager Becky Cooper said the kiosks are intended to make the camping experience more convenient while maintaining traditional payment options. Cash payments are still accepted through existing fee boxes for those who prefer them.

The three campgrounds offer basic amenities and operate on a first-come, first-served basis, with fees set at $20 per night. James Kipp and Coal Banks Landing opened April 1, while Judith Landing is expected to open in mid-May, depending on road conditions. Officials also reminded visitors to take safety precautions, noting that river conditions remain cold and fast-moving during the early season.
