The city of Austin, Texas, plans to have 10 interactive digital kiosks installed downtown by the end of 2026, expanding public access to navigation tools, transportation information and local business listings, according to a Fox 7 News report. Operated by IKE Smart City, the kiosks feature interactive maps, event information, community resources, emergency notifications and free Wi-Fi. Users can also transfer directions to their smartphones.
Two kiosks are already operating at Congress Avenue and Barton Springs Road and at Second and San Antonio streets. Two additional units are scheduled for installation by the end of October, with six more expected before year's end. The city has identified 50 potential kiosk locations and evaluated them for feasibility. Property owners near planned installations will be notified. The kiosks will also promote nearby businesses, with discounted advertising rates available to small businesses.
The initiative uses an advertising-supported business model that city officials say requires no taxpayer funding for installation or operation. Advertising revenue will be shared with Austin, providing a potential source of municipal income while expanding public information services. City officials also emphasized privacy protections, saying the kiosks will not contain cameras or be designed to collect personal information.
