Another Alaska town deploys a wellness vending machine

Seward, Alaska, officials and the Qutekcak Native Tribe have introduced a community wellness vending machine offering free health and hygiene products around the clock, according to a KDLL Public Radio report. The installation follows the opening of a similar machine in Juneau and is part of a statewide grant program from the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium.

Located outside the tribe's building, the machine carries opioid overdose reversal kits, lidocaine, HIV tests, cold and flu medicine and personal care products. Its bright blue exterior features artwork adapted from a mural by local artist Susan Swiderski honoring the tribe's history and culture.

The city and tribe initially applied separately for the program before deciding to collaborate. The project gained urgency after a fatal overdose in the community last fall prompted calls for additional prevention resources. Tribal program manager Krisnan Weston said the machine represents hope, prevention and greater access to care.

The machine includes a touchscreen with an optional anonymous survey that will help organizers determine which products should be restocked. Inventory may change with seasonal and community needs. The machine is at 221 Third Ave. near the Seward Children's Museum, and users do not need identification or proof of eligibility.
