UK library to save money with self-service

Libraries will be open longer with the use of self-service technology and save money

August 14, 2014

Hertfordshire libraries will be open longer with the use of self-service technology and still save money, according to the U.K.-based Hertfordshire Mercury.

The libraries' self-service plan, which will grant greater access to visitors, is designed to draw members and save taxpayers money. Hertfordshire-area residents will be gain access to tablets, kiosks, e-readers and Skype demonstrations. The Hertfordshire County Council's "inspiring libraries" plan is to teach children and older people how to use the new technology.

Libraries hope to reach more of the "'vulnerable and isolated'" population, the article said.

According to the Hertfordshire County Council's website, the library's self-service kiosks may be used to:

  • Issue and return books, magazines for loan and CDs;
  • Pay overdue charges;
  • Renew items; and
  • Allow patrons to check the items they have on loan.
