Self-serve kiosks bring more employees to McDonald’s Chicago flagship
McDonald's will be employing more people when it reopens its flagship store in Chicago today. The newly remodeled store offers self-serve kiosks, mobile ordering and payment, and delivery, according to Bloomberg.
Some employees who previously took orders will now deliver food ordered via touchscreens to customers' tables. There are still four cashier stations for customers seeking a more traditional experience.
CEO Steve Easterbrook said the changes are about repurposing labor. The more customers the restaurant has, the more employees needed, he said.
Franchisee Nick Karavites would not say how many more workers are needed for the 19,000-square-foot restaurant at Ontario and Clark streets.
Kiosks and other upgrades have been added in about 5,000 new McDonald's restaurants across the country. The upgrades will be made to nearly all freestanding restaurants by 2020.
