Redbox exits game rentals in kiosks, launches entertainment content production division

December 10, 2019

Redbox will no longer provide game rentals in its kiosks, the company posted on Twitter Sunday in response to a question.

A customer had asked, via Twitter, if Redbox is getting out of the game rental business after noticing there is just the option to buy, not rent, games within the iOS app. In response the company said games will be available for purchase at the kiosk until early next year, but are no long available to rent.

Redbox confirmed it is exiting the game rental business in a statement to The Verge on Monday.

In October, the company announced the formation of Redbox Entertainment, a label to acquire and produce content.
Redbox Entertainment is funding, developing and producing projects across genres, with a focus on action, comedy and suspense/thrillers.

Projects are being sourced directly and through a number of distribution partners and channels. Content acquired by Redbox Entertainment will be available at Redbox kiosks and digitally via Redbox On Demand, as well as in downstream windows post-Redbox release.
