New World Payphones has submitted planning applications for 12 public communications kiosks across Northern Ireland's Causeway Coast and Glens borough, according to a Love Ballymena report.
The proposed units would offer free calls to non-international numbers, interactive local information and defibrillators. Six locations are proposed in Coleraine, three in Limavady, two in Ballymoney and one in Portrush.
Each kiosk would feature a portrait touchscreen with a local map, nearby attractions within a 15-minute walk and emergency telephone numbers. Rear-facing digital displays could carry advertising, council announcements, public health information and emergency messages. Separate applications seek permission for the advertising displays.
According to the planning statement, the kiosks' open design would accommodate people with accessibility needs and help discourage antisocial behavior. New World Payphones said public phones remain an important resource for people without access to a mobile phone or landline, providing connections to emergency services and support organizations.
