McDonald's has deployed "Create Your Taste" self-ordering kiosks at three locations in Kingston, Ontario. The kiosk allows users to customize their orders and pay at the kiosk or at the register, according to a report by The Kingston Whig.
Users can create their own burgers by selecting from a list of 30 ingredients including cheeses, buns and toppings. "This is a global phenomenon. It started in France, it's in Australia, some pockets in the U.S. For Canada, by the end of the year we will have [it at] 1,000 of our 1,400 restaurants," said Greg Dye, director of operations for McDonald's franchises owned by Ron and Karen Sutherland. "It's interactive, and that is the way society is going."
The kiosks are designed to be helpful for users who cannot speak English, since they can simply select images on the kiosk to choose what they want. The kiosk also can be lowered to be wheelchair accessible, and it has a magnifying feature for users with vision problems, according to the report.
"It's all about the people. We make hamburgers, but we serve our guests and this is just a natural evolution in elevating that guest experience, making us a little different than our competitors," Dye said.
