The American Battlefield Trust has unveiled the North Carolina History Explorer, an interactive heritage tourism kiosk designed to highlight North Carolina's role in early American history as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary, according to a press release. The first welcome-center installation debuted at the Interstate 77 South Carolina Welcome Center, with identical kiosks scheduled to be placed at welcome centers across North Carolina in the coming weeks. The project was developed in partnership with tech firm Interactive Knowledge, the North Carolina Department of Commerce and America 250 NC.

The touchscreen kiosks use maps, photographs and multimedia content to introduce visitors to significant historical events, locations and themes from the state's past. The experience is organized into three sections covering the Revolutionary War era, the period from statehood through secession, and the Civil War years. Users can explore historical sites and stories tied to specific locations throughout North Carolina, with the goal of encouraging heritage tourism and deeper engagement with the state's history.

The rollout builds on a flagship North Carolina History Explorer kiosk installed earlier this year in the state legislative building, where it will remain through 2026. Project organizers say the kiosks are intended to help residents and travelers better understand North Carolina's contributions to the nation's development and to inspire visits to historic destinations across the state as America prepares to commemorate its semiquincentennial.
