Disney has filed a patent application, Method and Apparatus for Entitlement, for an automated system that could distribute assistive devices to eligible theme park guests, according to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The proposed kiosk would authenticate a user's identity through a connected network and check the person's profile before dispensing an approved item.

The system could provide devices such as assistive-listening equipment, headphones, strollers, wheelchairs, walkers, canes and powered scooters. It also could accept returned equipment for reuse or recycling, potentially helping Disney manage its assistive-device inventory more efficiently.

The patent application does not mean Disney has committed to installing the machines. Questions also remain about how the company would determine eligibility, according to a Theme Park Insider report, an issue that has generated debate as Disney has revised its accessibility procedures to address changing guest needs and potential misuse.
