CPR training kiosk gives UConn students hands-on lifesaving practice

An interactive CPR training kiosk at the University of Connecticut's Student Union is teaching students how to perform hands-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation, according to a UConn Today report. The American Heart Association provided the kiosk with support from Hartford HealthCare, UConn's Department of Allied Health Sciences and UConn Rescue. The kiosk is scheduled to remain at the Storrs campus through mid-October.

The kiosk uses a game-like program that explains the difference between cardiac arrest and a heart attack, demonstrates CPR and lets users practice compressions on a mannequin. It provides immediate feedback on hand placement, compression depth, pace and recoil. The training is available in English and Spanish and includes subtitles.

The kiosk offers a free alternative for students who may not be able to afford a full CPR course, while encouraging them to pursue certification later. Similar installations have appeared at other Connecticut universities and UConn campuses, with more than 10,000 people trained statewide. The initiative seeks to increase bystander CPR, which can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim's chances of survival but is performed in fewer than half of cases.
