Chicago's Mercy Hospital and Medical Center has installed outpatient prescription-dispensing kiosk MedAvail MedCenter in its emergency department, according to the Chicago Gazette.
"We're pleased to be able to offer this exciting, new option to our patients, enhancing the patient experience," said Carol Schneider, Mercy's president and CEO, in the article. "This first-of-its-kind, 'ATM'-style prescription kiosk will make it easier and more convenient for our patients to receive commonly prescribed discharge medications prior to leaving the hospital. We are also able to offer this service to our own hospital staff, increasing access to both staff and the community," she said. "It's about helping our community live well."
Patients filling prescriptions at the kiosk can engage in live two-way audiovisual conversations with a "telepharmacist" 24 hours a day. The pharmacists can answer questions and counsel patients on medications in real-time.
"We also believe that, as more health care systems move to 'at-risk providers,' this type of solution will not only improve patient outcomes, but provide a positive business impact to the health care system itself," said Ed Kilroy, CEO of MedAvail Technologies Inc, in the article.
The kiosk accepts Medicare, Medicaid and other prescription insurance carriers and takes debit and credit cards.
