Walmart will begin offering tap-to-pay at select Walmart stores and Sam's Club locations Aug. 24, expanding the payment options available to customers at checkout, according to a press release. The retailer plans to bring the technology to all of its U.S. stores and clubs by the end of 2026, followed by Walmart fuel stations by mid-2027.
The contactless payment system will allow shoppers to pay with eligible contactless cards, smartphones and smartwatches. Customers will also be able to add eligible Walmart, Sam's Club and OnePay cards to digital wallets.
Tap-to-pay will join existing payment methods including cash, credit cards and Walmart Pay, the retailer's app-based payment system.
Walmart said the expansion is part of a broader effort to give shoppers greater flexibility in how they pay and manage their money. Sam's Club members will continue to have access to Scan & Go, which allows them to scan merchandise and complete purchases through the Sam's Club app without using a traditional checkout lane.
