The self-checkout industry is experiencing growth in western Europe and Japan, according to a report by RBR. For example, 19 percent more SCO solutions were shipped to western Europe in 2014.
Japan has also experienced a 40 percent growth, as many retailers begin to deploy them to save space. SCO shipments to the U.S. dropped in 2014, but the report suggests it will increase as other U.S. retailers such as Target utilize SCO.
Other areas of potential expansion are China and Russia. RBR believes that the amount of units installed worldwide will rise from 210,000 in 2014 to 335,000 by 2020.
Currently the largest SCO vendor, according to the report, is NCR, which ships 64 percent of all SCO machines, followed by Wincor Nixdorf which shipped 16 percent.
