Seattle food cooperative removes self-serve kiosks

January 31, 2019

PCC Community Markets, a food cooperative based in Seattle, has decided to remove all the self-checkout kiosks from its stores by summer, and has already removed them from stores in Fremont, Greenlake, Aurora and Redmond, according to KIRO Radio.

Heather Snavely, vice president of marketing, said the company stopped placing the machines in 2016 and has realized that the kiosk does not create community connections.

Snavely said customers were not complaining about self-checkout, but feedback has been mostly positive since the removals. It is easier for customers not to have to find out where to scan their items, and having staff checkout makes alcohol purchases easier.

The company will not be adding jobs, Snavely said, but will reassign existing employees.
