Scranton, Pennsylvania explores Wi-Fi kiosks for its downtown

June 9, 2017

The Scranton, Pennsylvania city council has voted to explore deploying informational, Wi-Fi kiosks downtown, according to The Times Tribune.

Tom Touchet, CEO of Smart City Media LLC, described a possible contract with the city prior to Thursday's council meeting. His company currently works with New York City, Washington, D.C. and Kansas City, Missouri.

Smart City Media would deploy 40 kiosks downtown, providing interactive digital screens that have information about transportation, public safety and entertainment, according to the Times Tribune. The kiosks would also carry paid advertising.

The company would also provide 200 mobile beacons offering free Wi-Fi at no cost to the city.

There would be a revenue sharing plan that would provide the city $800,000 over five years, Touchet said.

A final vote is expected in the next few weeks.
