RFID-based self-checkout system targets specialty shops

May 13, 2013

The Nestlé Nespresso boutique in Munich, Germany, is testing an RFID-based self-checkout kiosk by French manufacturer IER. The Expedited Self Payment kiosk is being targeted at smaller specialty shops that offer high-value goods, according to RFIDjournal.com.

After selecting items for purchase and placing them together in a basket or bag, the customer goes to the ESP self-checkout terminal and places the bag in the kiosk's recessed area. The articles are immediately identified by a simultaneous reading of the RFID labels on each item.

Shoppers have the option of paying either via a mag-stripe credit card, or with NFC-based mobile payments though the kiosk's built-in NFC RFID reader, the article reported.

Once the customer has paid for the articles, the labels are automatically deactivated and the customer can leave the store with their purchases. The system also enables a store to update its inventory data automatically as sales are made.
