Although Walt Disney Studios has jumped on the 28-day delay bandwagon of new releases, Redbox isn't waiting to give its customers access to the studio's newest rental, "John Carter."
"We've always worked with Disney on a per title basis and in the case of 'John Carter,' we are sourcing by alternative means," said Kate Brennan, senior public relations manager of Redbox.
Just as it does with movies from Warner Bros., which also demanded that rental companies wait to stock new releases, Redbox is stocking its machines with copies purchased from retail stores. "John Carter" will be in Redbox kiosks June 12, which is only one week after it went on sale.
Disney had previously offered its DVDs to Redbox on the same day as retail stores but changed the policy last month with the release of its Japanese animation movie "The Secret World of Arrietty"
Universal Pictures and 20th Century Fox also have a delay on new releases, but Redbox doesn't stock their titles during the first four weeks of release because of agreements with those studios to wait in exchange for a significant discount. It has no agreement with Disney.
Warner Bros. recently demanded that Redbox wait 56 days to rent its DVDs, which sparked Redbox to buy those DVDs from retail stores.
