New World Payphones Street Limited has submitted plans to install communication kiosks, including one with an integrated defibrillator, in Dunstable, Houghton Regis, and Leighton Buzzard, Central Bedfordshire, according to a Luton Today report. The kiosks, operating under the Communication Act 2003 and the Highway Act 1980, aim to provide accessible communication facilities, including emergency services access, especially in areas with poor mobile coverage.
"The services people need from public call boxes are altering. NWP plans to reflect these changes, upgrading and adapting the communication kiosk to allow a base level coverage provision across urban areas fit for the 21st century," according to a NWP planning statement submitted to the news outlet.
"NWP recognises legacy kiosks have historic problems, including lack of access for wheelchair users, problems with calling cards, and often attract anti-social behaviour.
"A new modern design reflects the instantly recognisable telephone kiosk heritage, ensuring it provides open access for all. It's a robust construction made of stainless steel which will aid reduction of vandalism and assist with ease of maintenance."
The kiosks will offer touchscreen information, card and contactless payment options, and advertising displays on the back. NWP also pledges to partner with Trees for Cities for tree planting initiatives in collaboration with local authorities. The kiosk planned for 2 West Street in Leighton Buzzard will include a defibrillator.
