Toronto-based Playdium today announced its launch of its DVD rental kiosk program. Playdium Movie Magic replaces conventional brick and mortar rental retail shops and already has more than 70 kiosks deployed throughout various retail outlets, including 25 Walmart Supercenters.
The machines allow consumers to rent DVDs for $2 plus tax for a day. Any additional days are $1 plus tax. Kiosk capacity is 625 discs, and content is primarily made up of new and recently released movies with some classic titles as well.
Playdium Movie Magic began testing DVD kiosks in late 2010, but started rolling out the program this year. The company plans to have more than 200 kiosks by early 2012, and is also testing Blu-ray format in some locations. It will begin testing video game rentals in Q4 of 2011.
Playdium has been watching the success of DVD kiosks in the U.S., where DVD rental kiosks number more than 40,000 units deployed and represent about 33 percent of the DVD rental market, said Len Keywood, Playdium CEO.
