More than half the 32,663 post office outlets generate less revenue than the average self-serve mail kiosk, Postmaster General John Potter told reporters at a press conference this month, according to the Federal Times.
Despite the fact that four out of five post offices now lose money after mail volume fell 12 percent from 1999 to 2009, it is nearly impossible to close any outlets. Potter says he would like to review the number of post offices but can’t due to federal rules and opposition from lawmakers, unions and voters.
