Ireland's academic libraries turn to self-service

September 26, 2013

The technology company 3M is rolling out its second-generation SelfCheck library kiosks to libraries around Ireland, according to businessandleadership.com.

The new kiosks feature customized front panels and 3M RFID technology that allows for fast item identification. The RFID tags are guaranteed to last the lifetime of the item, the article reported. The kiosks also feature a 22-inch high resolution LCD touchscreen, a barcode scanner and an integrated chip-and-pin payment system.

3M estimates that more than 90 percent of all major academic libraries in Ireland now have some form of self-service technology.

"Self-service represents an efficient way for all libraries to maintain service levels even under the pressure of on-going budget cuts and staff freezes," said Eoin Healy, marketing manager for 3M Ireland, in the article.
