Co-operative stores consider joining ban on £2 coins for self-service machines

June 19, 2014

The U.K.’s Co-operative grocery stores are considering joining U.K. supermarket chain Morrisons in banning £2 ($3.40) coins at self-service tills after discovering that people are paying with similar-sized foreign coins, reports the Daily Mail.

Morrisons banned £2 coins from its self-service checkout terminals after foreign coins, including the €2 coin ($2.71), the Iranian 250 Rial ($0.01) and the Thai 10 baht piece ($0.31), were deposited in the machines.

According to the Daily Mail, the Co-operative will 'assess the situation' across its own self-service tills. The Co-operative has over 5,000 grocery stores in its network.
