Urban Electric, a British company, has designed electric vehicle chargers that can retract into the ground under sidewalks when not in use, addressing concerns about negative aesthetics of electric chargers, according to a Green Car Reports report.
The company has received 4 million pounds (about $5 million) to install 18 charger hubs in demonstration projects in Dundee, Scotland and Plymouth, England. The hubs can charge as many as 108 cars and allow drivers to pay via a mobile app.
The company plans to install its chargers on public parking lots and residential streets.
Olivier Freeling-Wilkinson, company co-founder, said that by being located just above the low-voltage network, the chargers can be accessed safely and not create street clutter.
