Maximizing usage with successful kiosk design

August 27, 2013 by Lucy Bateman — Business Development Manager, Cammax Limited

Touchscreen kiosks are transforming everyday public locations. They are designed to serve a specific purpose within an environment and are highly customized to meet the user's needs. Whilst function is the key, aesthetics play a valuable role in encouraging user interaction.

Are aesthetics important?

The success of a kiosk design is determined by how well it communicates its use and meets its desired function. Design can have a significant impact on how the user responds to the interactive kiosk. The initial aesthetic impression has influence on whether a passerby will engage or not. Research from the HUSAT Research Institute found that the design is one of the most preferable aspects of a kiosk, if it is "playful, lively and motivating to use."

The user experience

The user experience is established when the design complements the function of a kiosk. Interface displays on touchscreen kiosks are designed to create ease of use through simplicity. Layout, color, button size, navigation and hierarchy are all qualities that help to form a positive user experience.

Visuals should encourage engagement and exploration, especially when there is an alternative option in the same location. In a health care environment, a patient has a choice between interacting with a receptionist or a self-service kiosk, to process a prescription or book an appointment. Similarly, a self-check-in kiosk needs to persuade a visitor to engage with technology instead of a manned reception. In addition, the design contributes to the usability and accessibility of a kiosk. If the visual characteristics invite interaction, the usage increases, which eventually drives user acceptance.

Style

It is the visual appeal that initially catches the user's eye, which motivates them to explore the functions. Styling is imperative when it comes to the aesthetics of a kiosk. For example, aspects such as shape, symmetry, scale, texture and color can invite users to interact in high trafficked locations. Simplicity and consistency are key aspects to successful design.

As consumers become more aware of the latest technologies and gadgets, they desire modern, stylish applications. Branding also plays a role in attracting the user's attention, in providing color and imagery to engage with. Other ways to encourage use include advertising, signposting, demonstrations and on-screen language.

Interactive kiosks are faced with challenges concerning usage and overall user acceptance. Intelligent design can maximize potential for a positive first impression; however, the software and usability determine the final impression. With the customer experience at the focal point, both function and aesthetics are critical to the success of a kiosk.
