Telemedicine kiosk co raises $8 million in latest funding round

May 13, 2014

U.S. remote diagnostics kiosk provider HealthSpot has raised a further $8 million in its latest funding round.

According to its SEC filing, the company has now raised $18 million out of a total offering amount of $20 million announced in March 2013. A further $2 million remains to be sold.

HealthSpot Station kiosks provide telemedicine for routine medical conditions that might be treated through a walk-in clinic. The kiosks allow patients to interact with board-certified healthcare providers using high-definition videoconferencing and a suite of connected medical devices that stream biomedical information in real time.

Patients can consult with health professionals of their choice in any geographic location, without the need to visit them in person, according to HealthSpot. They can see on the screen what the instruments in the kiosk are revealing to their doctor, and they can be more involved in the diagnosis, HealthSpot CEO Steve Cushman said in a video the company posted to YouTube.

HealthSpot says its kiosks can make a difference in locations such as employer sites, long-term care, universities and schools, hospitals, military locations, developing nations and prisons. Kiosks in these locations can be operated by staff who assist patients and clean diagnostic instruments.

Patients are responding well to its kiosks, HealthSpot said. “Taking part in their own checks gets patients actively involved in their own care,” it said. “Almost 90 percent of the patients in our pilot programs would use a HealthSpot Station again, and the same number would recommend it to a family member or friend.”
