Virginia hospital system turns to patient check-in kiosks

January 10, 2014

The LewisGale Regional Health System in Virginia has deployed self-service patient check-in kiosks within all four of its hospital emergency rooms, according to an article on southwesttimes.com.

The kiosks allow patients to scan their driver's license or type in basic identification information, followed by a series of questions to capture the reason for the visit, symptom severity, and other key information.

According to a news release from LewisGale, using the kiosk helps the ER staff to expedite the diagnosis and treatment process. It also establishes the order in which patients are seen, with priority given to serious or life-threatening conditions.

"This technology provides patients with a better and faster emergency room experience by creating a more efficient way for information to flow quickly from patients to caregivers," said John Bartlett, president of LewisGale. "That is exactly what needs to happen in the ER."
