City officials in Alexandria, Virginia recently ordered the removal of all redbox DVD kiosks stationed outside 7-Eleven convenience stores, according to the the National Association of Convenience Stores.
The machines were operating in violation of existing special-use permits, said Barbara Ross, Alexandria's deputy planning director. She said all operations at 7-Eleven stores must take place inside the physical store, so extending a power cord outside to power a redbox machine violates the permit.
"It's our job to enforce these permits," Ross said in the story. "We hope they can manage to retain the machines and move them inside the store." To date, the machines have been removed but have not relocated to inside the stores.
