UK supermarket installs training computers

May 28, 2003

HERTFORDSHIRE, England -- Supermarket giant Tesco has introduced training computers in 780 of its stores to help tackle basic computer-skills problems in its U.K. workforce.

The United Kingdom's largest retailer has 1,982 stores across the country. The company may install at least one PC in each of the centers to help staff increase basic IT skills, including learning to use Microsoft software packages and email applications, according to a story in HR Gateway.

Michelle Hepton-Dyer, learning manager for the company, said, "We need to offer staff ongoing development and support, and as an employer of choice we need to offer life skills to our employees."

The store is also opening the second of its Tesco Learning Centers in Milton Keynes in June 2003, allowing staff and families access to facilities to learn a wider range of skills.

Tesco's courses are supported by UFI Learndirect, the government's flagship learning center, which means that basic-skills training is free to all employees, the article said.
