U.K. police worry about ATMs in phone booths

(Edinburgh) Evening News: Police chiefs raised fears that new phone boxes, which are fitted with cash machines, will become prime targets for ram-raiders and robbers. The boxes, designed by BT, incorporate an ATM in a phone kiosk — with a public pay phone on the outside. Four of these boxes already have been installed in the capitol, with ATM Payphones at the West Port and Fountainbridge.
 
But council planners are now set to rule that no more of these boxes should be built following warnings from police that robbers could use vehicles to ram them and access the cash inside.
 
Police also claim that workers filling the machines with cash on an open street could be at risk of robbery, and that members of the public taking cash out of the machines could be watched by other people using the telephone just centimeters away.
