Shoppers at Turkey's Migros Türk supermarket chain are embracing self-checkout technology from NCR, according to an article from International Supermarket News.
Erkin Yilmaz, assistant general manager of Migros Turk, said the new self-checkouts are so popular with customers that the chain is considering a new store format that would feature six self-checkout kiosks and only one traditional checkout lane.
"In fact, a few shoppers are so enthusiastic, they will wait to use self-checkout even if other lanes are open with nobody in line," he said.
Yilmaz added that innovative uses of technology are central to the brand's success, with "Technology Leadership" often used as a slogan in company advertisements.
"NCR Self-Checkout is a prime example. While the economy has presented a challenge to retailers throughout Turkey, we expect our investment in this technology to pay future dividends," he said. "We currently have self-checkout in six stores, and our goal is to equip at least 100 more as soon as feasible."
