The Dutch coffee company Douwe Egberts recently incorporated facial recognition software into its instant coffee vending kiosk — creating a marketing stunt that satisfied the caffeine cravings of red-eyed travelers.
The machine was placed in a terminal at South Africa's O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. The system initially perplexed those who failed to find a means to order and pay for the coffee, until sleepiness got the best of them and they let out a yawn, immediately triggering a freshly brewed cup. According to video, the machine gave away coffee to 210 travelers.
