Texas plans to automate six driver's license centers

October 29, 2012

Texas joins the growing trend toward automated driver's license centers, as the state's Department of Public Safety plans to open six high-tech DPS centers by the end of 2013.

According to an AP brief, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held the DPS License Mega Center in Pflugerville, near Austin, where more than 700 customers are expected to be handled on a daily basis. DPS said the upgraded system will let customers reserve spots, and walk-in customers will use self-service kiosks to make appointments.

The 2011 Legislature provided $63 million for six high-tech DPS centers. Two will be located in the Houston area, two are meant for Dallas-Fort Worth, and one will be built in the San Antonio area, the AP reported.
