Tax payment kiosk error causes incorrect late fees in Virginia

A new tax payment kiosk in Albemarle County, Virginia recently caused some residents to receive late-payment notices because of an incorrect posting date, according to The Daily Progress.

Betty Burrell, the county director of finance, said 152 payments made on the June 15 deadline were affected. The payments, both for personal property and real estate taxes, were posted on June 16 but were actually made on time, Burrell said. The system incorrectly added a penalty which has since been corrected.

She said she hopes the error does not cause people to stop using the kiosk. She said the error was a date posting error and not a system error.
