Summit to publish third edition of retail kiosk report

January 27, 2003

ROCKVILLE, Md. -- Summit Research Associates, Inc., a consulting firm devoted to the kiosk and self-service industries, will soon publish the third edition of its popular report, "Kiosk Industry Sector Report: Retail."

According to a news release, the report examines the current and future status of retail kiosks, the fastest-growing sector of the kiosk market, and is based upon the feedback of retailers who have deployed kiosks.

A number of charts are included, detailing the reasons retailers are deploying kiosks, the methods by which kiosks are being promoted, the average cost per unit, techniques used to obtain employee acceptance and other factors that can spell the difference between success and failure.

Industry trends are discussed, including the growing popularity of kiosks that allow digital camera owners to print their pictures, the use of scanners for price checks and registries, the growing acceptance of self-checkout units at supermarkets and the widespread deployment of airline check-in units.

Many popular retail kiosks are evaluated in the Case Studies section of the report, including the BMW Virtual Sales Center, Fujifilm's Aladdin Digital Photo Center, Wal-Mart's Music and Movie Station, Kodak's PictureMaker, Sheetz's Made to Order and Healthnotes.

The Case Studies are measured against Summit's Kiosk Evaluation Template, which presents a quick overview of each kiosk project. It includes descriptions of the locations within the store, the enclosure, signage, attract loop, user interface, peripherals and any special features that make the kiosk stand out. A detailed evaluation of each retail kiosk follows the template.

The report will be available in PDF format for $695. Those who order the report by Feb. 15 will receive a $100 discount. A CD-ROM version is available for an additional $10, including shipping and handling.

Summit has also prepared a two-hour CD-ROM-based PowerPoint workshop on retail kiosks featuring the projects highlighted in the Case Studies section of the report plus many more. It normally sells for $450, but may be purchased for $175 along with the new retail report.

Summit Research Associates also offers consulting services, including workshops and briefings on the kiosk industry, strategic planning and application, interface and content evaluations.

More information on the upcoming retail report and how to order, as well as other Summit services, is available on the Web site.
