Stora Enso is introducing an automated retail solution called Intelligent Cabinets, which are RFID-enabled kiosks that let customers purchase goods using smart phones. Customers can use payment apps such as WeChat or MobilePay to unlock the cabinets for items, according to a press release.

Each item in the cabinet has a Stora Enso ECO RFID tag which is automatically detected by the cabinet. When customers close the cabinet door, it charges their app for the item.

"After successfully launching sustainable ECOTM RFID tags it was a natural step to enter the automated retail market, where our technology can make a difference today," Martin Ros, senior vice president, intelligent packing, Stora Enso, said in the release. "Based on our research and pilot deployments we see tremendous potential and scaling opportunities, especially in early adaptor markets for consumer convenience."
